All signs are made from reclaimed discarded furniture, which I cut to size. Next, I work with AI to get an idea of cartoon version you are happy with. Following approval, I cut the new image into layers with Cricut design studio, then create the sign using permanent vinyl.

The street side of my house had zero curb appeal when I moved in. I have been working on starting some honeysuckle and bougainvillea, but until they take hold, I needed something else to make my house a little more welcoming. I created this address sign with planter boxes, and since this side of the house gets full sun, I opted for fake plants to keep maintenance easier. I can change them out based on the season, or even put real plants in there after the summer heat is done.

My house numbers are now easily visible from the street, and my street-facing garage is slowing getting more appeal.

This was made from 3 fence pickets, costing me a total of $3 (I got them in bulk for $1/eqch) plus the numbers, which I got in a bargain bin for $0.25/each, bringing material costs to $4. I connected the boards with pocket screws and scrap strips across the back. I am constantly inspired by the fence picket projects by @matthewpeechwoodworking and created this little gem without any plans.

All in all, I completed this project in about 2 hours.

I made this with 2 leftover 2x4s and 1 2x6 redwood board. After making it, I realized I wanted the redwood color to really stand out, so I stained the rest dark.

When nearly everything you make is a prototype, things are going to turn out differently than expected; you can call it failure and be upset, or you can call it a new opportunity and get excited.

I recently had the privilege of experiencing a #RoniHabib presentation in which we celebrated every “failure” with a “woohooo!!”, a philosophy I have always tried to infuse in my teaching.

I used to have a sign up in my middle school science classroom with FAIL in big red letters:

Attempt
in
Learning

So while I may have transposed my cut list for my first chicken picnic table and made the tabletop slightly too small, I didn’t see a failed tabletop; I saw a framed sign just aching for some paint. I cut and glued on the bottom piece for the key hooks and while the glue dried, I painted the board.

The top left corner is the outline of Mt Shasta as seen from Redding, CA. If you’re in Weed, CA, I can make you a reverse image! 😉

I learned a bit about working with stencils, and was thankful the “welcome” stencil was a sticky one. In short, I think I will hand paint the detail pieces on future signs and just stencil the big words.

Now off to rip and glue some boards for the nearly-completed chicken picnic table (HUGE shoutout to @matthewpeechwoodworking for inspiration and teaching me almost everything I know about woodworking through his engaging, informative, fun YouTube channel).

And remember… always be yourself… unless you can be @nickofferman , then be Nick Offerman. (Shoutout for more woodworking inspiration)

This is a prototype and I definitely learned a few things in making this that I will do differently next time, but overall, it’s not bad for my first shot!

The flowers are artificial for staging purposes and staying alive in 100 degree summers.
